Local Resources for Community Members

Long Beach Adult Education Consortium

About Us

The Consortium

Recognizing the need to provide adults with the academic and career skills needed to be successful in today’s economy, and in the spirit of collaboration, the California Legislature committed funds to create regional consortia made up of unified school districts, community college districts, and community based organizations. These consortia develop local plans for expanding and improving education and workforce training for adults. The key program areas of the Consortia include Adult Education (ABE, ASE, Basic Skills) and programs leading to a high school diploma and high school equivalency. In addition, the consortia offers English as a Second Language including Citizenship preparation. Short-term career and technical training with high employment potential is also a priority including older adult programs related to entry or reentry into the workforce as well as programs for adults with disabilities. The consortia also plans to offer training to adults who are supporting school age children and need to help them succeed in school.

For more information on training programs at Long Beach City College and with our partners please visit LBCC Adult Education and for programming provided at the Long Beach School for Adults please visit Long Beach School for Adults (LBSA).

Who We Are

The Long Beach Adult Education Consortium (the “Consortium”) includes two member institutions, the Long Beach School for Adults (LBSA) and Long Beach Community College District (LBCC). The Consortium provides education and training services for adult learners in the greater Long Beach area.

The Consortium is made up of these two members, but is informed by a long list of robust community partners. The partners help to inform the Consortium of student needs and gaps in programming and resources. The Consortium provides a venue through regular public convenings for direct feedback as well as creating an environment for partner collaboration. Please visit our Community Partners page and Supportive Services to learn more about the services they offer our community.

Who We serve

Through strong community partnerships and the support from leadership at both consortium member institutions, the Consortium serves a regional community of over 566,000. The city of Long Beach, the region’s largest city with over 83% of its total residents, has a high need for adult education and workforce services. Twenty-nine percent of the residents earn less than the county living wage. Additionally, 21% of Long Beach residents over the age of 25 have yet to complete a high school diploma representing over 70,000 residents throughout the region. Sixty-five percent of Long Beach City have a large population of residents with low English proficiency and nearly 10% report living with substantial disabilities, and over 20% of the population is 55 years and older.

What We Do

The Consortia members just completed a yearlong planning process culminating in a three year plan for the region for 2019-2023. The Consortia members currently provide extensive services for ESL students, high school diploma and high school equivalency, along with HiSET preparation and testing, and Career Technical Education training throughout the community and partner locations. The next three years will include the development of new programing for basic skills training especially below 8th grade level, programming for adults with disabilities and older adult training for entry or reentry into the workforce.
